Caroline Kennedy drops Senate bid

Caroline Kennedy caught Washington watchers off guard early today by dropping her bid to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the new junior Senator from New York. 

In a brief note to New York Gov. David A. Patterson, Kennedy withdrew from consideration for appointment to the post, citing "personal reasons." The note followed a phone call by Kennedy to the governor’s office on Wednesday.

NSA spied on journalists, other Americans 24/7

Russell Tice, a former analyst for the uber-secret National Security Agency, says former President George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program including spying on millions of Americans, including journalists, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tice, appearing on Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, says Americans were targeted under the pretense of profiling them for elimination from the NSA’s high-tech surveillance programs but — in fact, the agency was keeping tabs on the day-to-day lives of American citizens who have no connection with terrorism.

Tice specifically identified journalists as a target of the expanded NSA spying but said others groups were targeted as well.

Out with the old, in with the new

In his first full day as President, Barack Obama went to work dismantling former President George W. Bush’s policies and imprint upon the federal government.

A freeze on enforcing the tidal wave of pending regulations signed by Bush in his final days in office, a meeting with Pentagon officials to start work on withdrawal from the Iraq war, closing the controversial prison at Guantanimo, freezing White House pay and new restrictions on lobbying were among Obama’s initial moves.

And more will come in the coming days, weeks and months.
