Retired NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw will replace the late Tim Russert as interim moderator for Meet the Press until the November election, current news anchor Brian Williams announced today at the conclusion of the Sunday news talk show.
Williams anchored this weekend’s Meet the Press and said Brokaw has agreed to moderate the long-running show through the election season.
The announcement ends speculation, for now, on who would replace Russert, who died nine days ago of a heart attack while taping a promotional piece for the show in Washington. Speculation had centered on White House correspondents Andrew Mitchell and David Gregory but the announcement of Brokaw puts the guess game on hold until after the Presidential election in November.
Brokaw, who has continued to do special projects for NBC since his retirement from the anchor chair, will also play a key role in the network’s coverage of the Presidential nominating conventions.
