Well folks, I normally don’t get into this issue with too many people out there, but I think it’s time to stand up for what is right…so here we go.
As we’ve all been aware, there have been an alarmingly increasing number of incidents involving the use of firearms by the deranged.
This almost always involves the gut wrenching tragedy of multiple deaths before the person committing these acts (perhaps in a moment of clarity…) puts themselves out of the reach of the legal system by turning a weapon on themselves. My heart goes out the the survivors of the incidents , as well as the families of the victims…
So why do we as a society lash out at the innocent in the aftermath of such a terrible event? I have some thoughts on the matter…
I think the Founders knew and recognized the idea that a free citizen included being able to resist tyranny. Even in ancient Rome, when a slave was freed, a weapon was placed in his hands as a symbol of that freedom.
The technology may have changed, but the idea has not. This IS the reasoning behind the Second Amendment. The reason that it is an Amendment, was that to the Founders of this nation, it was so blindingly obvious to them that they only belatedly saw the need to spell it out in law.
This need for government of any level to react to the tragedies involving firearms and the deranged, by punishing the innocent (by making new restrictions of firearms ownership) is pathetic. It is nothing more than the pandering to special interests for the maintenance of the money flow. Nothing more.
The simple fact of it is, if you object to firearms…don’t own them. If being dependent on another for your security is what you are comfortable with, then please feel free to do so. Such is the glory of living in a free country, you GET to decide.
All I would do is to point out that the increasing abrogation of our rights and freedoms as enshrined by the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, by an ever increasingly aggressive and secretive government at all levels, says to me that the Founders had reason to make sure that we could resist the slide into total tyranny.
Additionally, in an every society, there are those that prey on the helpless or the weak. Protecting oneself from such aggression IS a basic HUMAN RIGHT.
Something for all of you supporters of a U.N./European Union style disarming of the population may wish to think on, is that without the right or the ability to resist, the people are ripe and easy pickings for anyone…be it crook, or politician…neither group of which is known for their adherence to the letter of the law.
Additionally, consider this, the level of investigation and training that most states require of the citizenry that wish to carry concealed firearms is heavy…very heavy.
Most states require finger printing, photos, and a rather extensive background and criminal check of a minimum of 10 years of the applicants prior history.
That would be IN ADDITION TO a very involved course in the legal side of use of a firearm, storage requirements, where you can and cannot carry said firearm, and ultimately you must prove that you can shoot competently too…and this for most people is just the beginning.
So you would think that after SO MUCH placed in their way, the people that are successful in getting such a permit would be by implication seen by government and police as “reasonable” people right?
Wrong. Every time that someone lashes out at society with a firearm, the only ones that get punished are the people that have already proven that they are competent to carry such an additional burden.
WHY?
Why do we allow the politicians to do this? The hysterical screams of the anti-firearms groups are at best a thin veneer over rather obvious agendas here gentle reader. I won’t waste your time restating the stunningly simple here, but I ask, has this country grown so sure of itself that we can implicitly trust any level of government to “protect us”?
I do not believe this for a single instant. Neither should you. All you have to do is look at the openly militarized police state that were becoming, and you’ll see that the Founders were spot on when they said,
” A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Basically in plain language here gentle reader, is the written guarantee in law, that the People of this nation are COLLECTIVELY the DECIDER and the DEFENDER. Not some puffed up, self important, short timer living in the official residence.
We, as the ultimate decider of the path that this nation takes, have the rather considerable responsibility to ourselves to be ABLE to resist tyranny in any form. And yes gentle reader, this includes armed force if there is no other recourse. Whether it is from the thug on the street, of the occupants of high elected office, WE decide…NOT them.
For those of you with a bit of a sense of humor, I would contend that Government is like non-consensual S&M, with the second amendment as the only safe word.
(Apologies to those I just offended…some times the sad humor of an old man just escapes the bottle is all…)
