Boehner declares Obamacare ‘the law of the land’

Speaker of the House John Boehner, displaying a rare admission of the obvious, Thursday declared Obamacare the “law of the land” and said he would no longer pursue the highly-political and fruitless strategy of trying to ram through a repeal in Congress.”

“The election changes that,” Boehner said in an interview with ABC News.  “It’s pretty clear that the President was re-elected. Obamacare is the law of the land.”

Exit polls showed repeated GOP efforts to repeal the law after it was passed didn’t sit well with voters.  Boehner and other Congressional GOP leaders tried over and over to repeal the law but each attempt that passed the house fell short in the Senate, where Democrats control the agenda.

With the Democrats expanding their hold on the Senate and fewer knee-jerk Republicans in the House, Boehner finally admitted it is time to throw in the towel.

His admission, however, did not please his radical right-wing second in command, Eric Cantor of Virginia, who forced the Speaker’s office to issue a statement later in the day declaring that Republicans are still “committed” to repealing the law and that such an effort is still “on the table.”

A source in Boehner’s office told Capitol Hill Blue Thursday that the table is where the effort will stay.

“The Speaker did that to shut Cantor up,” he said.

  1. All these statements from Boehner, Cantor, Obama, et al need to be viewed as negotiating tactics. “I concede this if you concede that.”. Boehner concedes Obamacare, which he’ll lose anyway. What does he expect in return?

  2. If the story is true then Boehner is the weakest Speaker in my lifetime. A Speaker in real control would just tell that a-hole Cantor to STFU and get with the program.
