Kansas prison plans big Super Bowl pizza party

The Super Bowl and pizza go hand-in-hand, sometimes even for people in prison.

On Sunday before the big game, Pizza Hut will deliver 942 large pizzas to the Hutchinson Correctional Facility in Hutchinson, KS, along with 9,630 chicken wings.

In all, 811 of the prison’s 1,862 inmates ordered the food and will pay for it themselves as part of a fundraiser to develop a Spiritual Life Center at the prison, said prison spokesman Steve Schneider.

The order adds up to about $11,000, with $3,000 going to life center fund.

The food order would appear to be a lot more than 811 people could eat.

“We have regulations against dealing and trading but you can imagine there will be some of that going on,” Schneider told Reuters.

Inmates with a good behavior record were allowed to order the food, which has been an incentive to proper conduct at the facility in recent weeks, he said.

Some inmates are allowed televisions in their cells and the Super Bowl will also be shown on other sets in the prison.

The food order is so large that employees will start making pizzas at midnight, said Jed Dusseau, general manager of one of Hutchinson’s two Pizza Hut outlets. The wings will be boneless so they can’t used for any untoward purposes.

Pizza will be a rare treat for inmates, Schneider said.

“It’s a good way to raise funds in a way that will benefit them anyway,” he said.
