Monday Deadline Day For Chicago’s Mayoral Hopefuls

Monday is the final day for candidates seeking city offices in Chicago to turn in their petitions–and the already long list of mayoral candidates is expected to grow.

According to the Chicago Board of Elections, candidates have until 5 p.m. to file their nominating paperwork at 69 W. Washington St.

Those looking to replace retiring Mayor Richard Daley need 12,500 signatures to qualify.

As of Sunday afternoon, the following candidates have turned in their paperwork: former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, former school board chief Gery Chico, U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, minister Wilfredo De Jesus, Chicago City Clerk Miguel Del Valle, M. Tricia Lee, Tyrone Carter and hypnotherapist Jay Stone.

State Sen. James Meeks is expected to file his petitions Monday. Meeks already announced his candidacy.

Community organizer Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins is also expected to file a reported 40,000 signatures on Monday. In a press release, Pelt-Watkins campaign called her an “authentically grassroots” candidate in a “field heavily populated with career politicians.”
