Obama fires McChrystal, appoints Petraeus

General David Patraeus

A senior administration official tells The Associated Press that President Barack Obama has accepted Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s resignation as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan and is replacing him with Gen. David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command.

McChrystal was pushed out over his blistering remarks about administration officials quoted in a magazine interview.

After an Oval Office meeting with McChrystal in the morning, Obama huddled with his war advisers and planned to announce his decision on the general’s fate to the nation at 1:30 p.m. EDT in the Rose Garden.

The official spoke only on condition of anonymity, because the president’s announcement was not yet public. Petraeus now oversees the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

  1. When you fight a war that you either don’t want to end or you cannot win, it doesn’t much matter who is at the head, unless you simply want a disposable general.

And isn’t Petraeus the guy who just became so dizzy in front of a congressional committee that he had to be relieved. Now this guy is going to run both wars? Hell, if Carl Levin was too much for Petraeus to cope with, how can he deal with the Taliban and the Iraqi bombers?

Sure doesn’t look like we really want to end these engagements. If we do, how will Halliburton make money?

  2. Well, I’m glad Obomber fired McChyrstal and hired Petraeus….Now Will get that Hollywood Ending to Pipe-O-Stan that we’ve all dreamed of…I feel very warm & Fuzzy

    • Is that the one where they barely get out of the embassy in Kabul via Blackhawk as the guerrillas storm the gates?
