U.S. Democratic lawmakers voted on Wednesday to subpoena Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to testify about administration justifications for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

On a party-line vote of 21-10, the House of Representatives’ Oversight and Government Reform Committee directed Rice to appear before the panel next month.

Republicans accused Democrats of a "fishing expedition." But Democrats said they want Rice to explain what she knew about administration’s warnings, later proven false, that Iraq had sought uranium from Niger for nuclear arms.

"There was one person in the White House who had primary responsibility to get the intelligence about Iraq right — and that was Secretary Rice who was then President George W. Bush’s national security adviser," said committee Chairman Henry Waxman, a California Democrat.

"The American public was misled about the threat posed by Iraq, and this committee is going to do its part to find out why," Waxman said.

  1. “My Husband and I”

To the tune of “Cigareetes and Whiskey and Wild Wild Women,” as recorded by Red Ingles.

Oh my husband and I we’re doin’ quite well
Sendin’ thousands of Muslims to fry in Hell
A new Middle East is what we demand
If we don’t get it, we’ll make it all sand

A new Middle East to my husband’s plan
Our Crusade’s gonna make it a bran’ new land
And those who don’t like it will surely fail
My husband and I we shall prevail

We’re now the rulers, we’re runnin’ the world
My husband decides and his foes I derides
Together we make up a regular team
With Laura alongside, it’s all quite a scream

  2. (*sung to the tune of ‘Candy Man’*)

-Who can take the truth, and spin it into lies
-And lie and lie and lie, and spin it into total Bull-crap
-The Condi Girl…..The Condi girl can!!!

  3. I was listening to NPR yesterday afternoon (which makes it a fairly normal afternoon for me) – and heard Robert Dallek discussing nixon and kissinger, their relationship, and the Nixon administration, which he described as possibly the least transparent administration this nation had ever seen, with the exception of the current Bush administration.
He also described Nixon as always needing to be assured that what he was doing was correct – his rather prejudiced view of the world and his inability to admit to his own failures.
It all rang very true – it appears that RM has been reincarnated – as GW …
As Kissinger was sort of the token intellectual Jew in the Nixon whitehouse – could Condi be a token intellectual black in the current white house? I wonder if she (Condi) is the root of racist jokes the way Kissinger is supposed to have been …
