We have dumped all ads

For most of its almost 32 years as an online political news service, Capitol Hill Blue has had ads, furnished by a service. We were an early user of Google’s ad service and it provided the ads for last 10 years.

That’s over. We have canceled our Google AdSense service and this website, along with others that I publish, will provide news and information withuy intrusive ads. Online ads, in our opinion, are out of control. Trying to read a news article with ads appearing every few paragraphs is distracting and poor service to our readers.

In addition, we have found an increase of ads that are scams, Chinese knockoffs claiming to be selling “American made” items. What they deliver is poor quality and takes a long time to arrive from Hong Kong. We have no desire to be part of such traps.

Our apologies for allowing such ads to appear on a website that tries to provide factual information to readers.

We are ad free and we don’t conceal what we offer behind paywalls. The news is free and without distractions of ads, popups, distractions or lies.

Capitol Hill Blue began publication on Oct. 1, 1994. Our 32nd anniversary will be in two days. Thank you for your readership and support.

  1. It is time for those of us fighting the fascists to stop monetizing our efforts. This is a sacred battle to preserve the Western Democracies that are under attack. I applaud your move. Of course, support is necessary.

Doug Thompson published his first news story and photos at age 11 -- more than 65 years ago -- a newspaper article about racism and the Klan in Prince Edward County, VA. From that point on, he decided to become a newspaperman and photojournalist. In high school, he reported news and shot photos full-time at his hometown paper befoe the youngest full-time reporter for The Roanoke Times daily in Virginia in 1965, followed by12 years as reporter, columnist and photographer at The Telegraph in Alton IL before relocating to Washington, DC. After a short sabbatical as a Congressional staffer and political operative, he returned to media as a contract photojournalist for newspapers (Washington Post, New York Times, etc), online media and magazines. He has spent more than six decades years covering news around the country and the globe and has won awards from The Virginia Press Association, Illinois AP and national associations. Today, he and his wife of more than 50 years, live in semi-retirement in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Virginia.
