Cain avoids direct denial of sexual harassment reports

Herman Cain

GOP presidential contender Herman Cain refused Sunday to directly deny reports that he was sexually harassed two female employees of the National Restaurant Association while he served as the association’s chief executive officer in the 1990s.

Cornered outside the CBS Washington studios after an appearance on “Face the Nation, Cain first refused comment on the report and then, instead of answering a question on whether or not he has been accused of sexual harassment, Cain shot back at the reporter: “Have you ever been accused of sexual harassment.”

Cain’s campaign spokesman, however, is denying the report from the web site Politico that said Cain was charged with sexual harassment by two female employees and that the association shelled out five-figure settlements to both.

“Inside-the-Beltway media have begun to launch unsubstantiated personal attacks on Cain,” campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon said in a written statement. “Dredging up thinly sourced allegations stemming from Mr. Cain’s tenure as the Chief Executive Officer at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, political trade press are now casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up to the facts.”

However, sources within the association confirmed to Capitol Hill Blue over the weekend that the reports are true and that other female employees complained about Cain’s suggestive remarks and sexual innuendos.

“He was always on the make,” says one former female staff member at the association. “We would make inappropriate remarks about women’s bodies and attire.”

The former staffer said new female employees were warned to avoid being alone with Cain.

“I was afraid of him,” she said. “So were others.”

  1. And Rush Limbaugh is now saying that people accusing Cain of past sexual harassment incidents are racists. Maybe he’s just, as he puts it, being ridiculous to illustrate the ridiculous…? Or maybe he’s forgotten how many times he himself has used the phrase “playing the race card” since Obama first became a potential Democratic candidate for president.

  2. Thanks Woody, hi Carl… I am coming getting my sarcasm sword sharpened now with the two year mark of my new life approaching, just in time for election season.

My prediction is that Cain will self-destruct politically by New Years and end up with his own show on Fox News – but in the meantime I sure would like to see him interviewed by Rev. Al.

    • Glad to have you posting to CHB again Hal. I’ve always enjoyed your commentary. : )

  3. The guy is brilliant. He has to get the male tea party vote. But he’s black. He has to overcome the ingrained racism of the white tea party male. What does he do?

First he gets the vote of the tea party men who smoke. My hunch is a lot of them do. They don’t appreciate the government telling them not to. Done that. He could probably get more votes if he promised to reduce the price of cigarettes.

As for charges of sexual harassment, now he gets the votes of all those tea party men who make lewd comments to and about women.

If he comes to the next Republican debate packing a .44 magnum pistol and manages to say this to Mitt Romney he’s got the nomination:

“… this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?”

    • Sounds to me that Cain is suffering from shades of ‘Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill syndrome’…no?

What other scandals does this guy have stashed in his seabag? We really don’t want to know at this point do we…?

    • Good to see you “back on the rag” Hal!

Cain is either running the worst campaign ever or the best book tour ever. Not sure his staff even know which it is.
