Obama’s sharp return to the liberal left

President Barack Obama tried being a moderate.

That angered his liberal base.

So now he’s trying to become a born-again liberal.

That’s angering moderates.

They say moving sharply to the left destroys what little hope Obama might have had to build the kind of coalitions that allow Presidents to actually get things done.

Moderates argue that Obama’s new strategy of “soaking the rich” will backfire and set the Democratic party back 30 years to a time when it was considered a fringe party hovering on the margins.

Conservative Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska says the President should stick to his earlier plans to cut spending and stop venturing left into raising taxes and “soak the rich” strategies.

“There’s too much attention on dealing with closing so-called loopholes, eliminating deductions and raising taxes,” Nelson says.

Democratic strategist Mark Penn Tuesday said Obama is “basically tearing apart his own coalition.”

Added Penn:

President Clinton managed to regain his footing without raising taxes and protecting Medicare and Social Security. President Obama has it the other way around. He’s already said he would consider cuts to entitlements and now he’s talking about tax increases… He’s ignoring the one group he really needs, independents.

Columnist David Brooks, writing in Tuesday’s New York Times, also says Obama is abandoning the center he needs to continue his Presidency.

Writes Books:

The president believes the press corps imposes a false equivalency on American politics. We assign equal blame to both parties for the dysfunctional politics when in reality the Republicans are more rigid and extreme. There’s a lot of truth to that, but at least Republicans respect Americans enough to tell us what they really think. The White House gives moderates little morsels of hope, and then rips them from our mouths. To be an Obama admirer is to toggle from being uplifted to feeling used.

The White House fired back, saying Obama no longer in a mood to compromise.

“We were in a position of legislative compromise by necessity,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said Tuesday.  “That phase is behind us.”

  1. The anger is not about what Obama is as a “moderate” – whatever that is today. The anger from people like me is that he rolls over and caves without a fight. I really like the “new” fighter that is emerging. And, he hasn’t “moved sharply left”. He is simply fighting for the bottom 98% of the country instead of pandering to the Republican base – the top 2%.

Sandune – above – has it right. The Republicans are against ANYTHING Obama is for. It makes absolutely no difference if Obama is liberal, moderate, or if he adopts all Republican positions – the Republicans say no to EVERYTHING!

    • Fighting for the bottom 98% ? Hogwash. How about his crony buddies, his political bros, his collectivist soul mates, his narcissitic self?

Can you say Solyndra? SEIU? ACORN? Fast and Furious gun-running to push his gun control agenda? Illegal NLRB preference for unions and EPA regulatory stranglehold on business and the economy? Ideological energy policy that decreases supply and increases the cost of everything? Expansion of the welfare state to keep his proletariat constituency pacified so that illegals continue to be enticed to come and work the “jobs that Americans won’t take because [years of] unemployment compensation is more lucrative than the minimum wage”?

      Welcome to national dysfunction…

Zero is just another fast-talking, self-serving, anti-capitalist who uses the “poor and downtrodden” as chips in his globalist poker game. Add it all up and he’s as anti-American as they come.

  2. This is ridiculous! All Americans face a shortage of cash now and again and we don’t waste time trying to go over our checkbooks looking for the money to clear us up. We sell something, or refinance something, or like President Obama, we take from one investment and give it to another.

We have to cut back on the loop holes as well as cutting our costs of government until the labor force can grow and pay us back our debts.

Obama’s plan to take on a million or so new workers to bring our infrastructure up to par will take a lot of money. Where else can we accrue this much financial base to pay for the workers?

The Conservatives would tear apart any plan from the White House as they believe bringing down the white house will gain them a position of leadership.

I hope it doesn’t. Our government is on a precarious pitch at this time and the Conservatives will be celebrating the decline when we fall. At one time, this might have been an effort of treason because their attacks on Obama are attacks on all Americans.
