![]() Sen. Barack Obama waits backstate at a rally (AP Photo) Republican Mike Huckabee responded to an offstage noise during his speech Friday to the National Rifle Association by suggesting it was Barack Obama diving to the floor because someone had aimed a gun at him. Hearing a loud noise and interrupting his speech, Huckabee said: "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he — he dove for the floor." There were only a few murmurs in the crowd after the remark. The Obama campaign had no comment. Later Friday, Huckabee issued a statement saying: "During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention." Huckabee, who sought the GOP presidential nomination, won the leadoff Iowa caucuses and seven other states. But he dropped out after Sen. John McCain, the likely nominee, piled up a series of big victories. An ordained Baptist minister, Huckabee attracted strong support among religious conservatives. He and former GOP candidate Mitt Romney addressed the NRA convention Friday as did McCain. Huckabee's comments came during a nearly 20-minute speech in which he suggested gun education should start early. He also criticized the Democratic presidential candidates, saying neither Obama nor rival Hillary Rodham Clinton would fight to defend an individual's right to own a gun. "I'm not sure Senator Obama or Senator Clinton really get it," Huckabee said. Copyright © 2008 The Associated Press

The only problem being, dodging bullets could be construed as dancing. What's a neocon religious nut to do?

So much for Huckabum's VP offer. Jokes about assassinating your political rivals don't work, even if you're a phony Xtian pandering to the NRA. Who would Jeebuz shoot, Pastor Numbnutz?

This is not a joke,
Submitted by johnt66 on May 17, 2008 - 9:06am.This is not a joke, remember JFK,RFK and MLK, and with all the news out of the secert service, nose being hung in the black secert service member locker room, e-maill from the upper levels directors, we can't take this as a joke.

More likely that Mike Huckabee was speaking from his pandering ass heart.
His comment speaks volumes of what he thinks of an NRA memeber!!

Submitted by adamrussell on May 17, 2008 - 6:12pm.My take on his joke was that it was in no way intended as a threat but merely as a moronic macho put-down implying that Barack is a coward because he would duck if shot at. I would hope that the NRA members are not stupid enough to buy into that implication, but I suspect that they are just that stupid. If any NRA members want to correct me on this and denounce the Huckabee comment, then I will apologize.

Submitted by DejaVuAllOver on May 17, 2008 - 7:06pm.Sounds to me like the usual Sunday morning psycho-babble Christian put-down. I used to hear crap like this all the time when my parents made me dress up and go to this little building full of pompous, self-obsessed, arrogant blowhards like Pastor Mike.

Let's suppose this ugly side of his persona was circumstantially hidden from the everso gullible electorate only to find out this guy is a militant, "shoot'em all" and let "his" god sort'em out mentality...! He's definitely a racist, baptist, jerk!
Scary indeed...no?!

Submitted by Southerner on May 18, 2008 - 10:26am.It was an odd thing for Huckabee to say, especially since he was perhaps the only Republican to defend Obama during the Reverend Wright incident. My guess is that he was making a spur-of-the-moment but ill-considered attempt to get a laugh from his audience. If you've ever spoken in public, you know that these opportunities for spontaneous wit sometimes pop up. Something happens, a quip forms in your mind, and you have only a second or two to decide whether it's something you should say aloud. If it's a good quip, it can knock the socks off your audience and score huge points for you. If it's a stinker, you can blow your entire speech.
John Kennedy was a master at off-the-cuff quips. Apparently, Mike Huckabee is no John Kennedy.
