Veterans' office covering up soldier suicides "Support our troops?" Yeah, right! If this is how we support our troops, I am glad troop enlistment is way down. The Bush Administration has more COVERUPS than any administration in history!
When are people going to learn....EMAILS NEVER GO AWAY! But there is more.....

No, our government no longer
Submitted by old_curmudgeon on May 8, 2008 - 10:22am.No, our government no longer works because the voters had no interest in holding their elected representatives responsible for their actions. The voters decided to rely on the consciences [say what???] of those they elected to speak for them. And when the elected representatives did not speak for them but for themselves, the voters did nothing, for the most part - there are always some who pay attention but they are few and mostly ineffective in their singularity.
But that's just this old curmudgeon's opinion...
I respect your opinion and
Submitted by pollchecker on May 8, 2008 - 11:47am.I respect your opinion and agree to a certain extent.
But I would like to point out that when a gov't becomes so massive that it cannot pay for itself or enforce the laws that it creates, then it is useless.
A bureaucracy allows those we elect to APPOINT whoever to run rough shod over us in EVERY area of our lives without any accountability. Every eligible Citizen could vote but it would have very little effect on the bureaucracy except to shuffle bodies around who will continue to selectively enforce laws they believe are valid.
When the govt is no longer accountable when they break the laws, how can they hold their citizens to a higher standard? They can try but the inevitable result will be revolution. It is only a matter of how long it takes to reach that point.
Perhaps it will be when the military can no longer support the policies of their commander in chief. After all, history teaches that you must have the support of the military in order for any revolt to succeed.
With John McCain as a potential Commander in Chief, the possibiility of mass desertion in the military is a real possibility.
when a gov't becomes so
Submitted by old_curmudgeon on May 9, 2008 - 9:09am.My point is that the voters could have stepped in at any time in the last 150 years and stopped the expansion of the government by our representatives beyond what was necessary for the government to function. They didn't because they, mostly, were uninformed, uninterested, lazy, and willing to abdicate their responsibility for oversight of their representatives. Everyone will admit that our representatives are only human (mostly) and that they in their humanness are fallible. So, why would you not want to pay attention to what they were doing with the power we gave them in representing us?
We gave them the keys to the empire and then told them, "We trust you to look out for us!!"
Guess what?
So, you can blame the ineffectiveness of the government on its mass but someone had to let it get that way. I'm only trying to put the focus where it properly belongs.
Don't you think 150 years is
Submitted by pollchecker on May 9, 2008 - 9:47am.Don't you think 150 years is a bit much?
I understand your point but over that time people didn't have access to information the way we have had in the past 50 years.
