Here is an issue that should be very important to every citizen.....whether to increase the governments ability to spy on its citizens or decrease it.

Just lately, the following information has come out:

Citizens' U.S. Border Crossings Tracked, Data From Checkpoints To Be Kept for 15 Years

U.S. May Ease Police Spy Rules, More Federal Intelligence Changes Planned

Travelers' Laptops May Be Detained At Border, No Suspicion Required Under DHS Policies

Whatever happened to Article 6 of the Bill of Rights?

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Our country survived over 225 years without stomping on our rights, the way the Bushies have done. Even after Pearl Harbor, we didn't (even though we could have) go this far.

But because of 9/11, an attack that could have been avoided if we had a POTUS that was competent and had actually acted instead of playing golf, we cower like mice in fear of more acts.

Whatever happened to we will not let these people destroy our way of life? What a joke.

The Bushies have taken every opportunity (assisted by a pathetically scared Congress) to diminish our rights.

Today we are at a cross road. Do we elect someone who will preserve our rights as defined by the Constitution and Bill of Rights? Or do we elect someone who will continue to turn America into a Fascist state, similar to Nazi Germany?

Now while I understand that at this time both candidates will say whatever is prudent to get elected, there are ways of figuring out with a certain degree of accuracy what most likely would happen under either POTUS.

Of course, John McCain voted and continue to supports the Patriot Act. This Act is what enables the Bush/McCain people to get away with the actions referenced above.

The best predictor of future actions, is past actions.

Since John McCain has conveniently ignored this issue on his website, we can only go by how he voted in Congress...in other words his record. His actions clearly indicate that he supports these type of actions as he supports repeatedly the Patriot Act.

Now Senator Obama was not in Congress at the time of the Patriot Act so we can not use that against him. So how can we know what he would do?

Well first of all, from his website, we learn...

Soon after, he returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer and teach constitutional law.

Also, on his website, he says he will....

Strengthen Civil Rights Enforcement

although it says nothing specifically about Domestic Spying.

However, his recent vote enabling the expanded powers of FISA do give reason for concern.

I wish someone would ask the candidates during one of their debates about this issue since it is not addressed on either of the Candidate's website.

But in the end, we are left with our best guess. McCain's past actions clearly show that he is NOT TO BE TRUSTED!

His quest for power is so transparent (as in the Saddleback forum) that it makes me sick to my stomach.

And although I understand there is no guarantee that Obama would reverse this garbage, I will make one last point.

Before entering Government, one man served as a civil right's attorney and one man served as a warrior in the military. One man taught Constitutional Law and the other man voted for and continues to embrace, the Patriot Act, perhaps the biggest corrupter of our Constitutional Rights ever enacted.

So do we elect someone who will increase Domestic spying or decrease this crap? For me, the choice is clear. We don't need 4 mores years of Bush/McCain policies or else we might not end up with any rights at all.

Ms Pollchecker: Those three

Ms Pollchecker:

Those three articles should give goosebumps to every citizen of the US, since the reported rules are accompanied by the echo of goose steps.

There are three presidential debates scheduled. We the people should insist that each of the candidates be asked the following question:

"The US has or is planning rules that allow seizure and examination of laptops belonging to US citizens at border crossing without any suspicion of wrongdoing. The Department of Homeland Security has revealed a data base which retains border crossing information on all US citizens for a period of 15 years. The Justice Department has proposed a new domestic spying measure that would make it easier for state and local police to collect intelligence about Americans, share the sensitive data with federal agencies and retain it for at least 10 years.

"What are your views on these three measures, and what, if elected, would you do about each of them?"

And we should keep asking until we get answers.

Churlpat -- a plutarch by any name is still a plutarch

And we should keep asking

And we should keep asking until we get answers.

I agree. I think it is very interesting that this issue is not addressed on either candidate's websites under National Security or Civil Rights.

However, I noticed that John McCain's website conveniently and SPECIFICALLY addresses the 2nd amendment regarding guns but nothing regarding the rest of our rights. Just more of the same political pandering to those crazy neo-cons.

Make both candidates start

Make both candidates start with the conventions and have them remove the protest cages. It's an easy thing to do and would show their good faith to restoring our rights.

Well spotted and put, all

Well spotted and put, all this. But I have to point out that the '06 Demo Congress should & could have put a sunset clause on the Patriot Act and those other acts (Military Commissions Act, eg) that are setting the US up for a fascist takeover. It's not just up to the POTUS. It's up to We, the People.
Don't we understand yet? If we let George do it, he's just liable to.

FBI May Start Spying On

FBI May Start Spying On Americans "Without Any Basis For Suspicion"

A Justice Department plan would loosen restrictions on the Federal Bureau of Investigation to allow agents to open a national security or criminal investigation against someone without any clear basis for suspicion, Democratic lawmakers briefed on the details said Wednesday.

So in essence, if the people RULING our country don't like you, they can investigate you without any good reason and any accountability.

They can literally ruin your life just because they don't like your politics.

We saw what they did with the Justice Dept...hiring AND firing people BASED ON their politics. Now you can go to jail based on your politics.

Yep, there's no doubt about who the TRUE TERRORISTS ARE.....BUSH/McCAIN are the REAL TERRORISTS....terrorizing innocent and true Americans who dare to speak out against them.
